Gamelan Camp
in Bali and Java

Departing from Los Angeles on June 26, the program takes place from June 28 to July 7 in Bali, with an extension in Java from July 7-15.

Cost for the program will be $1,995 (Bali only), $2,695 (Bali and Java). For departures from New York add $190; from San Francisco, Chicago, or Dallas, add $60.

Price includes

  • international air travel
  • room and board at Flower Mountain Center in Payangan group travel to Batur crater and temple, and an optional tour to Tenganan village and Eastern Bali
  • room and breakfast in Java (with Java extension)
  • tuition for music, dance, and language lessons
  • notation and recorded cassettes of the pieces studied

Gamelan kebyar

Study Program in Bali

  • Indonesian language
  • Javanese gamelan slendro, all instruments (teachers from Surakarta)
  • Javanese male and female singing (teachers from Surakarta)
  • instruction in Sundanese gamelan and kecapi/suling (teacher from Bandung)
  • professional instruction in a choice of several kinds of Balinese music: kecak, gong kebyar, angklung, gender wayang, gambang, selunding, and rindik
  • Javanese (Surakarta style) and Balinese dance, male and female movement discussions and talks on Balinese culture
  • attendance at selected evening performances in Ubud village

Sumandhi dance class

Study Program in Java

  • professional instruction on all instruments of the Javanese gamelan, both pelog and slendro, Jogyakarta and Surakarta styles
  • male singing (gerong and bawa)
  • female singing (sindhen and bedhayan styles)
  • daily contact with Ki Wasitodiningrat (Pak Tjokro), considered Java's greatest musician and a national treasure, now in his nineties
  • dance training in all styles
  • wayang (shadow play) movement and literature
  • tours to Borobudur, Prambanan and other ancient temple sites with one of the best guides in Java
  • an inside tour of the Mangkunegaran Palace in Solo, followed by an elegant dinner hosted by a member of the royal family, with special court gamelan and dance performances

Note: The Gamelan Camp can be combined with the full Indonesia Cultural Tour in Java and a week's tour in Bali for an additional $400, or the Workshop for Teachers, Parents and Children in Bali (two weeks) for an additional $500, or both of these at a combined price of $800.
