1999 Cultural Tour to Indonesia: Itinerary

The 1999 Cultural Tour will take us first to Central Java, and then to Bali.  Please note that departure in one day earlier than first publicized.

Tue, July 27 Departure from Los Angeles
Thu, July 29 Arrival in Bali. Join with CWM Bali Workshop group for one-hour flight to Yogyakarta, Java. Transfer to Manohara Guest House, Borobudur.
Fri, July 30 Sunrise visit to Borobudur monument and spend the morning visiting its miles of carved reliefs with a leading guide and scholar. Lunch with gamelan music at Pondok Tinggal. Visit Mendut and Pawon temples en route to Novotel Yogyakarta.
Sat, July 31 Special visit to ISI Jogya in the morning for a presentation on Javanese dance, city tour, arrive at Affandi Museum in late afternoon for painting and fine arts presentation by Kartika Affandi, followed by dinner and a folk performance.
Sun, Aug 1 Morning visit to Kraton Jogya for its weekly dance performance, followed by a palace tour. Afternoon free for shopping. Optional Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan Temple in the evening.
Mon, Aug 2 Early morning departure for guided visits to Prambanan, Candi Sewu and other ancient temples, ending with the ruined palace of Ratu Boku. Check in at Novotel Solo. Evening free.
Tue, Aug 3 Morning visit to STSI academy of the arts for a demonstration of ceremonial gamelans and a gamelan study session. Visit to Kraton Solo, then go to the town of Wonogiri for a demonstration of Javanese shadow play, dinner with Ki Dalang Oemartopo and his wife, Ibu, followed by a village performance of music and shadow theater.
Wed, Aug 4 Morning visit to the Mangkunegaran Palace for a rehearsal of its famous gamelan, Kyahi Kanyut Mesem, and a palace tour. Afternoon free for shopping and packing. Special farewell command performance at the Mangkunegaran Palace.
Thu, Aug 5 Morning departure for Bali. Transfer to a guest house in Ubud village. Afternoon walking tour in Ubud, visit museums. Evening performance.
Fri, Aug 6 Tour to Batur volcano and its temple, sacred spring at Tampaksiring, Pejeng Temple, and Goa Gaja cave. Evening performance in Ubud.
Sat, Aug 7 Morning free for shopping or just relaxing. In the afternoon a visit to a gamelan foundry in Blahbatu and the art market in Sukawati. Evening performance in Peliatan.
Sun, Aug 8 Tour to East Bali. Visit Kertha Ghosa Hall of Justice and museum in Klungkung en route to the famous traditional village of Tenganan. Return via a scenic route through the East Bali foothills.
Mon, Aug 9 Morning free. Afternoon visit to Dr. Brown's house in Payangan for a special event that showcases rare styles of Balinese music, followed by a dinner and performance in the outdoor theater.
Tue, Aug 10 Scenic tour to Mengwi Royal Temple, mountain market in Bedugul, North coast and West Bali.
Wed, Aug 11 Transfer to airport for departure to Los Angeles. Those wishing to stay on for independent travel in Bali may stay for a total of 60 days, but should book the return flight before departure from Los Angeles.
