In 1999 the Center for World Music
embarked on a new comprehensive World Music in the Schools Program. Among its successful partnerships that connect students with master artist-teachers, the Center collaborates with The Museum School and Canyon Crest Academy to cosponsor the first permanent year-round Balinese and Javanese gamelan programs at K-12 schools in the United States. The Center offers apprenticeships with native artist-teachers.
For 2012-2013 the Center is pleased to announce its cadre of 34 artist-teachers and 20 ensembles-in-residence of 20 different music and dance traditions from around the world: Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and America. These artist-teachers and ensembles are available during the academic school year 2012-2013 for short-term or year-round weekly classes as well as for performances at school assemblies. Our artist-teachers provide 1,000s of K-12 students in San Diego with weekly music and dance instruction.
Special thanks to Monty Levenson of Tai
Hei Shakuhachi for his generous donation of several of his fine
shakuhachis (Japanese bamboo flutes) to the Center's World
Music in the Schools Program.
