Shridhar Shridhar Sarod

K. Sridhar is one of the most respected modern masters of the sarod. Two music traditions co-exist in India, that of the North (Hindustani) and of the South (Carnatic). It is very rare for musicians to master both traditions; Sridhar has done so. K. Sridhar was, from early childhood, initiated into the Carnatic music tradition by his mother, a descendant of fourteen generations of musicians including Narasimha Bhagavatar, and also the pupil of Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, the foremost specialist in the Dhrupad Dhamar style of the North. At the age of 12 Sridhar became the youngest member of Ravi Shankar's orchestra. He has given concerts world-wide, and forged exciting links with jazz, flamenco, Arabic, African, Persian and European classical musicians.

8pm, The Neurosciences Institute,10640 John Jay Hopkins Dr. San Diego, CA 92121. General $25, Students $15 at the door.

"My first response upon hearing Lotfi’s music is astonishment. As he plays he opens a path and finally a road to that place inside us of enormous assurance; such assurance paradoxically often brings tears to the eyes."
·  Robert Bly, 1996

Mohammad Reza Lotfi is recognized throughout Iran, Europe and the United States as a brilliant composer and interpreter of traditional Persian music. Born in Gorgan in northern Iran, he graduated from the College of Fine Arts at Tehran University, where he later taught and served as dean. He studied tar and setar under such great masters as Shahnazi, Boroumand, Davami, and Salehi. In the 1970s he was the director of the Center for the Preservation and Propagation of Traditional Iranian Music in Tehran and Chavoosh Conservatory. He contributed for many years to Iranian National Radio and Television and founded the group Shayda, which was instrumental in the revival of Iranian traditional music. After an extensive concert tour of Europe, he moved to the United States in 1987. In addition to performing widely throughout this country, he established the Shayda Cultural and Artistic Center in Washington D.C. to continue his teaching and scholarly activities.
